But Sir! The Driver Ran Off!!

Thanks to Sue & David for another story!

The Comet

A BANNED driver from Potton who drove into Bedford town centre to buy drugs led police on a 12-mile chase.

John Lee, 27, was spotted by an eagle-eyed officer who knew he had been disqualified from driving for two years 11 months earlier.

It was a freezing cold night and the roads were slippery when Lee was seen behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Astra at around 9.50pm on January 11 this year.

Lee sped off followed by the police patrol car.

In a bid to shake off the pursuing officers he jumped a red light before heading along Ampthill Road and touching speeds of 80mph.

On the A6 he crashed his car into a Nissan Micra being driven by a learner driver.

He failed to stop and instead got onto the Bedford bypass where again he hit speeds of 80mph.

On the A600 he went around a roundabout the wrong way.

As he drove through the village of Cople he was doing 70mph.

He passed through Moggerhanger driving on the wrong side of the road.

Eventually on the B1042 heading out of Sandy, Lee stopped and quickly jumped into the passenger seat to try and fool police into believing the driver had run off.

Lee, of Myers Road, pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court on Friday to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop and having no insurance.

The court heard that Lee had a previous conviction for dangerous driving as well as eight convictions for driving while disqualified.

Stephen Akinsanya, defending, said: "It is only by good fortune that no one was injured."

He said that following the death of Lee's father when he was 20 years old he had suffered from depression and had begun taking illicit drugs.

Lee had been in Bedford that night to buy drugs, and when he was seen by police he clearly panicked and tried to make good his escape, said Mr Akinsanya.

Recorder Anthony Clover jailed Lee for a total of 20 months and his licence was endorsed.

He told him: "I take the view that you represent a substantial risk to the public and you will go on driving whilst disqualified.
