SCF Tip: Know how to open the cash register ...

Courtesy of

FAIRMONT, N.C. - February 28, 2007 - - Authorities in North Carolina are looking for a gunman who's cash-register-challenged.

Fairmont police say a would-be masked robber attacked a Family Dollar store clerk and took the cash register from the counter. But the robber apparently left empty-handed because he couldn't open the cash drawer.

Police found a trail of broken cash register parts leading to a trash bin. The register was behind the bin.

A detective says the gunman struck the 22-year-old store clerk several times with the butt of his gun before running out of the store with the cash register Monday night.

There were customers in the store at the time of the robbery, but they weren't hurt.
