An Iraqi man left blind by a bomb blast in his homeland appeared before magistrates yesterday charged with dangerous driving.

Omed Aziz, 31, was allegedly caught by police at the wheel of a car while his friend, Dlear Ahmed, directed him from the front passenger seat. Officers pulled the men over after allegedly spotting the car swerving across the road.

The police are understood to have found Aziz in the driver's seat and realised he could not see properly. Aziz pleaded not guilty at Warley magistrates' court. A trial date was set for September.
