VALPARAISO - A man and woman were arrested Thursday after employees at Menards reported they attempted to return an item taken from the store.

James Smith, 56, of Union Mills, and Colleen Gallacher, 19, of Walkerton, attempted to return a $199 air nailer without a receipt. Employees became suspicious, and the store manager checked security video. Police said the video showed Smith and Gallacher entering the store without the air nailer and walked to the aisle where the product was located and took it off the shelf.

Smith was charged with theft and false informing, and Gallacher was charged with attempted theft.
